Oregon's Strong Voice for the Middle Class

Weekly Update: The Big Picture.

Debt Ceiling Showdown

Have politicians in Washington DC lost sight of the big picture as the debt ceiling debate heats up? It would appear so, as politics took priority over jobs last weekend.

The Federal Aviation Administration was shut down at 12:01am on Saturday. This means 4,000 workers had to take a furlough for the weekend and 90,000 additional jobs are on the line, 574 of which are here in Oregon.  This isn’t just bad for workers; it’s bad for our government.  Nearly $200 million in ticket fees per week will be lost – money that is usually spent on aviation infrastructure and without it we are putting our country deeper into debt.

The longer this debate rages, the more our economy will be hurt.  Our leaders in Washington DC claim to be prioritizing jobs, but the repercussions of this standoff are the opposite of job creation.  Check out this week’s Take Action and send Congress a message: Stop hurting our economy, start creating jobs.
